From Medieval theory to modern AI, Musica ex Machina: Machines Thinking Musically explores the history of computational and algorithmic thought in music, showcasing how technological advances and human creativity have continuously expanded the boundaries of musical expression. Through historical objects, musical artworks, and immersive installations, the exhibition presents the works of past and present visionaries while looking ahead to the future of music.

Organized in conjunction with the second Solar Biennale presented by mudac, Soleil·s, the exhibition From Solar to Nocturnal unveils Staring at the Sun by Alice Bucknell and Interspecies Interfaces (Part I) by Matthew C. Wilson, two new productions realized in dialogue with the EPFL scientific community.   

The exhibition Shapes: Patterns in Art and Science explores the richness of the natural and artificial patterns that surround us. Bringing together art, mathematics, materials science and biology, it highlights the shared fascination of scientists and artists with geometric, dynamic and symmetrical structures.

Trees can live for more than 1,000 years, and current climate models predict climate change of just over 100 years in the future. What will happen then? A collaboration between the EPFL Plant Ecology Research Lab (PERL), performance artist Maja Renn and designer and artist Krzysztof Wronski has given rise to a speculative journey through time and into the near future of indigenous trees.

The exhibition presents a premiere of two works resulting from an intense collaboration between resident artists Josua Putzke and Alison Martin and the Geometric Computing Laboratory at EPFL, led by Mark Pauly, as part of the third edition of the EPFL-CDH Artist Residency Program, Enter the Hyper-Scientific.

Presented by the EPFL EssentialTech Centre and the ICRC with EPFL Pavilions and in partnership with the EPFL Center for Digital Trust (C4DT), the exhibition Digital Dilemmas: Humanitarian Consequences sheds light on the many digital risks faced by civilians and humanitarian aid workers in conflict zones.

For the thirty-second edition of the Artiphys festival, Encor Studio will be taking over the Pavilion A of EPFL Pavilions to exhibit a collection of recent works in a series entitled WARPED.

Artificial Architecture showcases five years of pioneering work by the EPFL Media and Design Lab, exploring the fusion of architecture and artificial intelligence. This exhibition presents immersive projections, live prototypes, and a larger-than-life-sized “design brain,” highlighting the vast potential and nuanced challenges AI introduces to architectural design.

Punctuated by crafted translucent sigils and informed by practical and speculative dialogues with computer and environmental scientists at EPFL, A Spectrum of Lost and Unnamed Colours is a mesmerizing mixed-media installation that takes us on a journey while calling for a holistic categorization of various types of color loss.

N-03X67 is a new work by architectural manipulator Sarah Oppenheimer that encourages human interaction with EPFL Pavilions’ glass structure. It was commissioned in the framework of the second edition of the EPFL-CDH Artist-in-Residence (AiR) Program Enter the Hyper-Scientific, in collaboration with the EPFL Laboratory of Intelligent Systems (LIS) and EPFL Laboratory of Integrated Performance in Design (LIPID).

Cut/Paste sheds light on comics' intimate relationship with their publication formats and the intriguing journey from tangible scissors-and-glue edits to artificial intelligence-powered transformations. Delving into editorial histories, it showcases how AI tools aid in adapting classic 1950s narratives for today's varied mediums, featuring reinterpretations by students from the Geneva School of Comics and Illustration. A profound exploration of tradition and technology in the digital comics realm.

The Visual Wonders of Science is a two-part exhibition presented by the EPFL Imaging Center in collaboration with Figure 1.A., featuring images and videos taken in the course of research on campus and/or by EPFL researchers. Some of them are presented to the public for the first time.

At the intersection of art, technology and construction, Cyber Physical: Architecture in Real Time brings together four dynamic and immersive installations that reshape our perception of space by transforming virtual data into tangible and interactive kinetic sculptures. Through 3D projections, augmented reality and artificial intelligence, the exhibition allows publics to interact with ever-evolving architectural structures capable of listening, learning, and reshaping themselves in real time.

Through the lens of art, Lighten Up! On Biology and Time explores the connection of living organisms with the natural cycle of light and dark. From fungi to ferns, from hamsters to humans, all have evolved circadian rhythms that connect them to the alternation of day and night. In our screen-based society, there is an increasing urgency to raise awareness of reconnecting to the outdoor environment. Nineteen installations transform our daily, lunar and seasonal rhythms into light- and soundscapes, immersive spaces or virtual experiences to remind us the necessity of regular light exposure for a healthy life.

Unfolding through a two-channel video installation, Mouthless Part III (Panorama) brings the spell of Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė’s visual universe into the space. It is part of their research project Synthetic Landscapes and the third chapter of their Mouthless video series.

Object of Interest 700 e presents us an opportunity to interrogate the role exoplanets play in the cultural imaginary. Although the first confirmed detection of a planet existing outside our solar system came only in 1992, exoplanets have quickly emerged as neocolonialist objects of interest.

Deep Fakes: Art and Its Double poses crucial questions about the potency of digital replicas to absorb audiences in enduring emotional encounters with universal art treasures. This exhibition opposes the use of ‘deepfakes’ for manipulation and misinformation, to explore very different perspectives, reimagining objects through advanced computational techniques.

From 12th June to 4th July, EPFL Pavilions, Pavilion A will host a dozen experiments set up by the science center Technorama in order to explore natural phenomena and technology.

EPFL Pavilions and CDH Culture present Defying Gravity, an exhibition showcasing the work done under the project Asclepios. This project was conceived by the EPFL student association Space@yourService, whose objective is to make space sciences more accessible to the public.

Conceived as part of the exhibition Spatial Affairs, presented at the Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art, Budapest, Spatial Affairs. Worlding is an exploratory online environment, a virtual multi-user exhibition populated by crawling artworks, where visitors’ avatars coexist with moving bodies of internet art and browser-based projects.

Art blended into our day-to-day objects like solar panels, a collaboration between artists and scientists, Watt is Art is a glimpse into what is possible in the realm of future architecture and building design.

Nora Al-Badri is presenting Babylonian Vision at EPFL Pavilions, the result of her work during the CDH / EPFL Pavilions Artist-in-Residence program. Al-Badri trained a neural network using GAN technology (General Adversarial Networks) to generate new synthetic Babylonian objects based on ancestral ones, thereby taking back and re-possessing cultural datasets from colonial Western museum collections.

EPFL Pavilions is devoting its early 2021 program to the theme of robotics, reflecting on the emerging perspectives and scenarios of this rapidly expanding field. The premise behind Nature of Robotics is to offer an unconventional look at the subject of robotics and to extend its understanding into broader notions, situated at the frontier between science and the visual arts. Modular, reconfigurable, soft, micro and bio robotics manifest the new paradigms of a discipline facing constant renewal.

ArtLab is moving away from its usual programming focused on the interface between art, science and technology to host Hope. This photo exhibition presents the work of the 12 finalists of the 2019 Prix Pictet award, selected from over 600 nominees. The images reveal moments of triumph in the face of adversity, and the product of efforts made to preserve the environment. Together, they demonstrate how optimism can encourage change.

Infinity Room 2 reveals elements of the rich history manifest in the school’s various archives, records and assemblages, through eight installations: Open Science, Archive of Modern Construction, Alain Herzog Archive, Campus Chronicles, Archival Constellations, Super-vision, Balelec Nights, and Shadows of Drones.

On the occasion of EPFL’s distinctive 50th year, ArtLab celebrates the campus and its histories with bifold exhibitions. The Infinity Room projects are stimulated by the concept of ∞ honouring the scientific spirit for ideas without bounds.

Thinking Machines. Ramon Llull and the Ars Combinatoria draws together scholarly, scientific and artistic modes of enquiry.
Through the exhibition, ArtLab rereads the late Middle Ages in the works of Ramon Llull, the outstanding Catalan philosopher and theologian, to explore the ramifications of his thinking in the realms of modern and contemporary art, and computation. The reverberations of Llullian thought on technology, art and culture find their present-day corollary in a pedagogical revolution which has ‘computational thinking’ at its core.

ArtLab is pleased and honoured to welcome the Prix Pictet, Prize for Photography and Sustainability. Works by the twelve outstanding photographers shortlisted for the prize, revolving around this years’ theme Space.

Kung Fu Motion, The Living Archive is the story of the dynamic traditions of Hong Kong’s martial arts, seen through the lens of advanced archival technologies. By combining EPFL devices and original canvases, the exhibition Noir, c’est noir? Les Outrenoirs de Pierre Soulages has an atypical and experimental character and suggests new ways of understanding, presenting and conserving the works.
